States Seeking Safe Patient Handling Legislation

On April 10th, Maryland's Governor, Martin O'Malley (D), signed into law "safe patient handling" legislation, requiring hospitals to establish a safe patient lifting committee with an equal number of managers and employees on or before December 1, 2007. The law requires the committee to establish a safe patient lifting policy on or before July 1, 2008

Maryland joins New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas, and Washington with similar laws and / or regulations in place. In 2007, eight other states have introduced legislation requiring the establishment of safe patient handling programs: California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, and Vermont.
