PAC Endorses Candidates In Tight Primary Races

Each election cycle, ANA-PAC endorses candidates with proven records as advocates for nursing and healthcare. In 2004, ANA-PAC endorsed 99 candidates for Federal Office -- this endorsement represents the ANA's highest seal of approval. ANA-PAC has endorsed a number of candidates for the 2006 mid-term elections, who are involved in tight primary races over the next few weeks. MICHIGAN: AUGUST 8, 2006
A key primary race to watch in Michigan is taking place in the seventh congressional district which is located just south of Lansing. Sitting Rep. Joe Schwarz (R) is facing a tough primary challenge from Tim Walberg. This is becoming one of the most watched primary races in the country. ANA-PAC endorsed Rep. Schwarz who has been a strong advocate for nurses not only in Congress, but also while he served in the Michigan state legislature. He most recently co-sponsored ANA's staffing bill, H.R. 1372. MARYLAND: SEPTEMBER 12, 2006
Although the primary election in Maryland is September 12, 2006, it should be noted that Maryland has early voting, which begins on September 5 and ends on September 9. HOWEVER, the deadline for registering to vote in the primary election is August 22, 2006.

With Rep. Benjamin Cardin (D) deciding to throw his hat in the ring for the U.S. Senate, Maryland's third congressional district has become a crowded field of hopeful Democrats. As a solidly Democrat district, the winner of the primary will almost surely win in November.

ANA-PAC has endorsed State Senator Paula Hollinger. As a Registered Nurse, Sen. Hollinger has served as Head Nurse for Mt. Sinai's first Surgical Intensive Care Unit, a Specialist in the Acute Stroke Unit at University of Maryland Hospital, and a School Nurse within the Baltimore County Schools. During 27 years as an elected official in Maryland, Senator Hollinger has been a champion of nursing and healthcare issues-sponsoring successful bills prohibiting mandatory overtime as a staffing issue and the Maryland whistleblower law that protects nurses who speak out about dangerous conditions. Sen. Hollinger currently serves as the Chair of the Maryland Senate Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee and has worked to build consensus among various organizations and points of view to successfully pass meaningful healthcare legislation.
