Lobby Day Participants

Each year, ANA members and advocates get up close and personal with Members of Congress through our annual Capitol Hill Day.

This year's event will be held in Washington, D.C. on June 8th, 2017, at the Washington Hilton.

Last year, 190 nurses lobbied Congress in 300 meetings with lawmakers and their staff, with hundreds more participating virtually via email and social media. ANA Hill Day is also when we hold our Congressional Nurse Advocate Awards – a special annual event recognizing those who champion our cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the proper attire for meetings?
A: You can expect that Members of Congress and their staff, as well as ANA staff, will be dressed professionally. Business or business casual attire is recommended, along with a blue shirt or accessory (scarf or tie) to show you're a part of the ANA Hill Day.

Q: Is there security on Capitol Hill?
A: You will have to go through security prior to entering any of the Congressional buildings. At certain times during the day we may face longer lines. Capitol Hill security is similar to airport security and though you may not have to take off your shoes, you will have to remove all items from your pockets and go through a metal detector. You may also be asked to provide a photo ID. Please do NOT bring any liquids. Try to leave large bags and any dangerous or pointed items such as razors or needles, aerosol containers or pepper spray at home.

Q: Where are the meetings actually held?
A: Meetings with Members of Congress are scheduled to be held in their offices. Senate and House offices are not located inside of the Capitol building, but in buildings surrounding it. Senate offices are generally larger and able to accommodate larger groups, whereas House offices are often smaller. Please keep in mind that space may be limited. Under the best scenario, we may have a special room to meet in – but in some cases, meetings will be in a reception area or even standing in a hallway.

Q: Will we be doing a lot of walking between meetings?
A: Yes, it's likely that meetings will be across hallways, buildings or even streets – comfortable shoes are a must. If you have any questions or potential issues, please email rnaction@ana.org.

Q: I'm not really political, what will I need to know and say during meetings?
A: Your biggest responsibility is to talk about your experience as a nurse and remember that no one can speak to healthcare issues better than you!

Q: What should I bring to meetings?
A: If you have business cards, please bring plenty (more than you think you’ll need). The people with whom we will be meeting will want your business card so that they can keep it for their files and follow up with you. Additionally, you may wish to bring a pen and paper to take notes.

Q: Where should I stay?
A: The group will be staying at the Washington Hilton at 1919 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20009. ANA has already reserved a room block. ANA is not responsible for payment of room and tax.

Q: Will transportation be provided?
A: Yes, all transportation to and from ANA-scheduled activities will be coordinated for you. ANA staff will direct you to the appropriate pickup and drop off areas.

Q: What if I have food allergies or have other special dietary restrictions that need to be made?
A: If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions please email rnaction@ana.org as soon as possible so that we may make the necessary arrangements prior to your arrival.
