On May 15th, 2014 Senator Jeff Merkley from Oregon introduced The Registered Nurse Safe Staffing Act (H.R. 1821/S. 2353) in the U.S. Senate. Nurse staffing and patient outcomes are inextricably linked. It is for this reason that safe nurse staffing is non-negotiable. Optimal nurse staffing takes into account the multi-factorial nature of providing patient care in a complex environment, and supports the nurse in the delivery of ethical, quality care, at every practice level and in all setting. ANA applauds the Senator for introducing this important legislation (H.R. 1821/S. 2353) that holds hospitals accountable for developing and implementing unit-by-unit nurse staffing plans, created in coordination with direct care RNs, and based on each unit’s unique circumstances and changing needs.
